In 1988 the Aussie 60 minutes team featured a TV special on local skating with a focus on Victoria. Unlike any mainstream media trying to paint a picture of who we were at the time: they didn’t botch it. Sure there are some awkward moments, but it never has the embarrassment factors that most TV skate specials feature. The ‘Easy Riders’ segment features influential Aussies and Kiwis including Lee Ralph, Gregor Rankine, Simon ‘Sac’ Reynolds, the Hill Brothers, the legendary Borgy (RIP) and many more. Also Melbourne heads: look out for the old Hardcore ramp that was nestled next to the famous Porsche sign and silos of Vic Pde in Collingwood and some old school Smith St and Brunswick Street footage. When this was on TV it was one of the only ways Aussie skaters could view locals in their element. People taped it when it was on and watched it religiously on their folks TV’s. It is great to see it surface again.
